The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has two versions: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. You can opt for either one depending on your requirement or the university or course you are applying to. Both versions give a valid and accurate assessment of a candidate's listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.

IELTS General

IELTS General Training is for aspirants who want to migrate to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the US or the UK, or who are applying for secondary education, training programmes and work experience in an English-speaking environment. The examination focuses on the basic survival skills of a candidate in a broad social and workplace environment.

IELTS Academic

IELTS Academic is for candidates applying for higher education or professional registration in countries where English is the main language of communication. The examination judges whether a candidate is ready to begin studying or training in English. Countries that widely recognise IELTS for study include the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Key Learnings – IELTS

What you will practise in each of the four IELTS sections.

IELTS Writing Section

Candidates take an academic writing module. Responses are short essays or general reports, addressed to an educated non-specialist audience. There are two compulsory tasks:

  • Task 1 (at least 150 words): look at a diagram, table or data and present the information in your own words.
  • Task 2 (at least 250 words): respond to a point of view, argument or problem by presenting a solution, justifying an opinion, or evaluating ideas and evidence.

IELTS Reading Section

The Reading module consists of three texts of general interest, dealing with issues appropriate for candidates entering undergraduate or postgraduate courses. There are three passages with forty questions in total.

Question types include multiple-choice, sentence or summary completion, short-answer questions, matching lists or phrases, and identifying writers’ views and attitudes.

IELTS Listening Section

The Listening module is divided into four sections. The first two deal with social needs, while the last two are closer to educational situations. The recordings run for approximately 30 minutes in total, may be monologues or dialogues, and can be heard only once.

Question types include multiple-choice, short-answer questions, note completion, sentence completion and labelling a diagram.

IELTS Speaking Section

The Speaking section is a structured interview with an emphasis on general speaking skills. It assesses whether candidates have the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively with native speakers of English.
